On The "Convention of the States"
Convention of the states and replacing the GOP with a shiny new party are no answer. They both rely on magical thinking that if what we have is not working then putting a new name on getting people together will produce a different result. It won't. The primaries fail because the Democrats can hijack the GOP ticket. They did it this year by having millions of Democratic voters push to vote in GOP primaries. They did not do so to help the GOP win in November. If they had not done so then there would have been a Republican running against a Democrat, and almost certainly the Republican would have won. Political parties are private clubs that offer candidates for the public's consideration. Having the members of the party vote in a publicly managed primary is very convenient. Having the party lose control over its nominating process is not worth the convenience. Both parties can suffer from hijacking. Both Lyndon Larouche and David Duke ran as Democrats. While I may smile at the discomfort they caused I do not blame the average Democrat for them.
