For the exercise of it, I wrote out a thorough and utterly boring analysis of what turns out to be pretty darned marginal improvements.<br><br>My back-of-the-envelope calculations rang up a range of 9 percent to 46 percent advantage in terms of total CO2 emissions including an averaged allowance for manufacturing added to 13,000 miles per year of driving over a 5-year period, for the expected range of qualifying MPG ratings.<br><br>That's based on 2 to 10 mpg extra for the new vehicles, assuming ideal performance in all the replacement vehicles.<br><br>Sorta makes me wish I'd been more disciplined in maths in my college days.<br><br>Anyhow, for a couple of hours' of mental rigor (which is just about a year's quota for me these days) I felt satisfied that the scrappage program was pretty well shown to be a bunch of bushwa.<br><br>- Mad Fiddler<br><br>no, really.<br><br>p.s.
